About Us

Hello, I’m Phil Powdrill, the founder of this website.

My job is to help people who want to be able to convert all that accounting mumbo jumbo into usable information, so they can actually see what is going on with their business, where the problems are, and what to do about them.

Simple as that.

Numbers have always been my thing – from my degree {mathematics} to my chosen profession {accounting}.

Now, I realise that numbers aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. They come more naturally to some people than others.

But, like it or not, the one thing every business has in common is numbers.

So why are surprisingly few people in business able to “talk numbers” confidently with their bosses, colleagues or teams.

Have you ever uttered these words?

“I’ve always struggled with the numbers.” or “I was always hopeless at maths at school.”

I must have heard those two statements a thousand times in business conversations. Intelligent people who maybe struggled with maths back in the day who ignore such a valuable source of information.

When finance is the language of business it saddens me that so few people are comfortable with the financial side of the business they either own or work in.

If you care about building a profitable and, most importantly, sustainable business but struggle to make sense of your numbers then stay with me.

I can help you acquire the “practical business finance skills” that are so critical if you want to build a successful, sustainable business.

Why are these financial skills so important?

Well, the higher you climb and the more successful you become, the more you will encounter people who are fluent in the language of business.

Most of these people probably couldn’t do an accountant’s job or fill a CFO’s  role. They couldn’t do the books each month or create a set of accounts. They don’t talk about debits & credits, trial balances and general ledgers. That’s the stuff of finance professionals, and it’s not what we talk about on here.

But they do understand the basics of financial measurement. They can read an income statement, a balance sheet, and a cash flow statement. They understand the difference between profit and cash. They get why the balance sheet balances.

The numbers neither scare nor mystify them.

In fact, I’d go so far as to say …

I’ve never met a successful business person who didn’t know their numbers – inside out, back to front, and upside down.

And …

If you want to be taken seriously and to communicate effectively then you must be able to use the language too.

Let’s be very clear.

A fear of finance and numbers can become a major barrier to your business success.

While on the other hand.

Knowing and understanding your numbers can give you a competitive advantage.

The good news is …

You can learn the practical business finance skills that you need.

I’ve made it my mission to demonstrate that for most people, practical business finance is no more than a set of skills that can be learned.

I don’t have magic beans or a secret sauce. What I do have is over 30 years experience of practical business financial management and a passion for sharing what I’ve learnt.

If you like what you’ve heard so far, and you think I may be able to help you with some of the challenges you’re facing, then why not contact me for an informal discussion.

There’s no commitment, and I won’t try to push you into a sale – we’ll just chat about your situation to see if working together might be a good fit.

Drop me a note via my Contact Form and we’ll sort something out.

Kind regards

PS: My philosophy is very simple. Everyone in an organisation performs better when they understand how they have an impact on their organisation’s financial performance.

In 2013 he escaped the corporate world to set out on his own. Through his coaching, online courses, and blog he strives to help people acquire the practical finance skills they need to build profitable, sustainable and successful businesses. He shares all of his practical business finance knowledge at Vestrica.com. Connect with Phil at LinkedIn.

When he’s not counting beans Phil enjoys life at home in Yorkshire, in the north of England. He may be number one on this site, but at home, he ranks only fourth (there is no fifth place) behind partner Karen and their two cats, Chalkie & Merlin.

Sport plays a huge part in Phil’s life. He’s a long-suffering fan of Derby County {COYR} – are all football fans described as long-suffering? – and loves his cricket and horse-racing. Ambition – to own the winning horse in the Nunthorpe at York. Best time ever – London Olympics 2012, never thought I’d get to experience the games in my own country.

Favourite cities are London (still gives me a real buzz), Florence & Bologna. His idea of bliss is enjoying a glass of red wine, watching the sun go down behind the Italian lakes.
